Lusatia, characterised by cultural diversity, multiple languages and the changes brought about by structural transformation. In this region, art becomes the connecting element between history, the present and the future. »Eye-Catchers – Space for Art« builds on this. The travelling exhibition carries artistic inspiration beyond Lusatia and brings the international exchange to life as an integral part of the festival.

Since the first edition of the Lausitz Festival, photographers have been capturing moments from the performances and offering glimpses into the events with their cameras. This creates something of a visual memory of the festival and brings to life the interplay between the people on and off stage.

The photo exhibition has already been on display in Lusatia in Finsterwalde, Görlitz, Zittau and Cottbus/Chóśebuz. A new concept is developed for each location: the selection, presentation and spatial staging are adapted to the specific conditions, thereby opening up new perspectives.

In Prague, »Empusion«, which illustrates the dynamics of cultural exchange between Lusatia and the heart of Europe, deserves special attention. The theatre production of the 2024 Lausitz Festival – inspired by the novel of the same name by Olga Tokarczuk – was performed last year at the Prague German-Language Theatre Festival at DOX.

Through the photographs of a total of seven artists, the audience is immersed in the atmosphere of the Lausitz Festival. Here, theatre photography serves not merely as documentation, but as an artistic language in its own right, conveying the atmosphere of place and time beyond the region’s borders. Within the space of Divadlo Na zábradlí, a new context emerges – a dialogue between image, architecture and audience.

The opening on 20 May from 5 p.m. offers more than just a ceremonial launch. The programme includes a discussion between artistic directors Petr Štědroň (Divadlo Na zábradlí) and Daniel Kühnel (Lausitz Festival), who will reflect on the significance of festivals as meeting places within a European context. Together with the audience, they will raise a central question that runs through the entire exhibition: What space does art need?

The exhibition is a joint event organised by the Lausitz Festival and Divadlo Na zábradlí in cooperation with the Liaison OZice of the Free State of Saxony in Prague, supported by the German-Czech Future Fund.
