For his recital in the Herrnhut Moravian Church Hall, the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will be performing no fewer than 33 pieces. Most of these, however, are extremely short – they are miniatures by the Hungarian composer György Kurtág, who celebrated his 100th birthday in good health in Budapest last February. Aimard interweaves Kurtág’s miniatures with excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s »Well-Tempered Clavier« and »The Art of Fugue«. The concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the parallels and contrasts between the two composers, separated by two and a half centuries, performed by arguably the world’s most accomplished interpreter of their works.
György Kurtág’s collection of short piano pieces, which he has titled »Játékok« (Hungarian for »Games«), comprises more than 400 miniatures and is constantly being expanded. The composer describes them as »a workshop for my life, a notebook«. Kurtág is one of the world’s most significant living composers and has worked closely with Pierre-Laurent Aimard for decades, most recently on the album »Kurtág: Játékok«, which was released in May 2025. The fact that the pianist juxtaposes his selection from »Játékok« in the concert with excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s »The Well-Tempered Clavier« and »The Art of Fugue« (he has also recorded both works) is anything but a postmodern whim: Kurtág regards Bach’s work as a central reference for his own creative output. In his programme, Aimard also sets in motion a clever musical dramaturgy. The whole becomes more than the sum of its 33 parts.

Der Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard wurde 1957 in Lyon geboren und begann bereits als Zwölfjähriger ein Studium am Konservatorium seiner Heimatstadt. Später studierte er bei Yvonne Loriod (der Ehefrau des Komponisten Olivier Messiaen) am Pariser Konservatorium und bei Maria Curcio in London. Mit 16 Jahren gewann er den Kammermusikpreis des Pariser Konservatoriums und den ersten Preis beim internationalen Olivier-Messiaen-Wettbewerb.
1976 gehörte er zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des von Pierre Boulez ins Leben gerufenen Ensemble intercontemporain. 2006 erhielt er den Preis der Kulturstiftung Dortmund. Von 2009 bis 2012 war er künstlerischer Leiter des Aldeburgh Festival in England, das sich insbesondere der Musik Benjamin Brittens widmet. Aimard ist Professor an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln und am Pariser Konservatorium.
2017 wurde ihm der Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis zuerkannt, die bedeutendste Auszeichnung für musikalische Leistungen in Deutschland. Obschon Aimard für sein Bachspiel gerühmt wird und auch zahlreiche Werke des klassisch-romantischen Repertoires aufgeführt und eingespielt hat, gilt sein besonderes Engagement der zeitgenössischen Musik. Er war Solist bei Uraufführungen von Werken von Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Tristan Murail oder György Ligeti, dessen gesamtes Klavierwerk er einspielte. Mit Ligeti wie auch mit seinem ungarischen Landsmann György Kurtág war bzw. ist Aimard künstlerisch eng verbunden.
