About the production

With her highly acclaimed solo albums and live programmes »Schumann Kaleidoskop« and »Resonanzen«, pianist Johanna Summer, who was born and raised in Plauen (Saxony) in 1995, has carved out her own musical cosmos: free improvisation based on classical piano works. This approach not only delights audiences, but also many of her fellow pianists. For example, Igor Levit invited her three times in a row between 2023 and 2025 to the Lucerne Festival's piano festival, which he curated, where Summer performed solo and in a duo with him on two grand pianos.

Her programme »Dialogues«, which will be released on record in autumn, continues the concept of exploring and retelling classical works together in exchange with non-improvising performers. At the Kulturweberei Finsterwalde, Johanna Summer will perform with her new musical partner, American Kit Armstrong, for the first time in front of an audience. He was one of the last master students of the recently deceased legendary pianist Alfred Brendel and is now himself one of the big names among the concert pianists of the younger generation.

The concert is designed as a duo evening, with Johanna Summer and Kit Armstrong playing off each other musically. The programme is created on the spur of the moment. Johanna Summer emphasises that she does not discuss with Kit Armstrong beforehand which »classical« works he will perform. All that is known is that the music will range from Georg Friedrich Händel to Olivier Messiaen – a broad stylistic palette from the Baroque to the 20th century.
