As the second oldest cinema building still in operation in Germany and an architectural Art Nouveau jewel, the Weltspiegel movie theater, which opened in 1911, is a listed building. Inside, the Art Nouveau staircase made of rose marble is fascinating. The coffered ceiling of the auditorium was once lined with gold leaf. The first sound film screening in Cottbus took place on May 29, 1929 in the "U.T. Weltspiegel". UFA AG operated the cinema until 1998; after extensive renovation and expansion, the house was ceremoniously reopened on May 31, 2011, with director Wim Wenders in attendance. This year, the world comes to the center of Europe with the Indian diva Kaushiki Chakraborty from the East and the American vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth from the West.
