Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film tells the story of Michal, who is raising his daughter alone because her mother died when the child was born. One day the girl, who is now twenty, discovers a letter to her from her mother, which the father had hoped to conceal until after his own death. What does it mean to be a father, and what forms does love take? Based on the commandment ‘Honour thy father and thy mother’, the film raises complex questions in many directions.
