In 1954–1956, the East German government built the Filmtheater Friedensgrenze in honour of the “peace border” with neighbouring Poland, with construction costs totalling more than 1,1 million GDR Marks. The building was celebrated as the most beautiful cinema in the Cottbus region and until 1989 was the centre of local entertainment activities in Guben. In 1990, Ufa purchased the building and renamed it “Filmtheater Guben”. Unfortunately, the cinema was closed in 2000 and fell into disrepair until 2020. Businessman Peter Wiepke founded the association “Friedensgrenze“, dedicated to the preservation and continuing operation of “the most beautiful cinema in the region.”
