The BLMK emerged in 2017 from the merger of the dkw. Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus and the Museum Junge Kunst Frankfurt (Oder). This merger combined two independent, complementary museum collections to create the most comprehensive museum resource of art from the GDR and subsequent artistic traditions. The dkw had already been housed since 2008 in the former diesel power plant, which is considered a prime example of 1920s power plant architecture. Architect Werner Issel (1884-1974) designed the building, which was completed in 1929 and is now an industrial monument and home to the BMLK.
